Bugging, Surveillance and Legalities
Something that’s not covered very often is the legal side of bugging and surveillance. A couple of news stories have come up recently that have caught my attention, and I thought I’d share them as examples relating to the legal minefield of surveillance.
In the US, Bush has decided not to reauthorise the government’s policy on issuing phone taps without a warrant. This means any government agency still has to request permission from a court of law before a phone tap can be used. Which means for anyone who installs or uses a phone tap without a warrant would be breaking the law.
I know the laws in the US are just as strict as they are in the UK, so you can expect tough penalties. I personally do believe that a court of law should be responsible for monitoring the use of equipment like this. We need some level of control!
Another case, but in the UK this time, is about a Millionaire that has been jailed for spying on people. He employed an agency that tapped phones and cracked computers. Also convicted that day were a number of other people using the same agency to spy on individuals. I’ve never known so many convictions!
Spies in the News
If you have wondered how I find out about the latest news relating to spies, then this is an interesting tip for you. I simply do a search on the BBC News website for what I am interested in, and then subscribe to the RSS feed of that search.
For example, do a search for ‘Spy’ on any page on the BBC News website, which takes you to Search Results on All of the BBC. Then click on the button that says BBC News and Sport. Then click on the RSS button, which takes you to the RSS feed for those search results! Simply use your favourite RSS reader to then get all of the news relating to spies each day!
