Global Remote GPS Tracking for under $500
In this day and age, there are a few cheap devices and gadgets around that allow you to track a vehicle or person. When I first looked at GPS trackers a few years ago, I found numerous solutions costs around $8000+ or £4000+ each. A price considerably out of the affordability range for anyone except governments or large businesses.
Changes in technology, such as drop in the cost of GPS modules, the pervasiveness of mobile phone data networks such as GSM and GPRS, and the miniaturisation of embedded electronics generally has pushed GPS trackers into the affordability bracket.
The TrimTrac is a £234 ($470) GPS tracking device primarily aimed at tracking vehicles. It works using the GPRS networks to transmit location data to the FollowGB tracking service. You can then use a web browser to track the location of the device anywhere in the world. The cost of tracking the device costs just 5 pence (10 cents) per query. The TrimTrac device itself is very compact, its slightly smaller than two glasses cases put side-by-side.
The Pay-As-You-Go model of tracking the device means that you can check the location of the device when you want to, rather than pay an expensive monthly fee. The device gives a location to within 5 to 10 metres (as do most GPS devices). It’s a great way to track the device when you want to, rather than being dictated by the tracking service itself.
FollowGB do some other really interesting trackers too, such as one that can be used to track a person!
