A recent story on BBC News tells of how UK Police Forces are using Spy Helicopters for intelligence gathering and law enforcement. The helicopters are just like normal model helicopters, but fitted with advanced (and very expensive) CCTV cameras. At 1kg (2 pounds), the helicopters are quite heavy compared with model helicopters, which is likely to be due to the battery and CCTV camera optics to allow zooming in to ground level.

The Merseyside Police want to use them for intelligence gathering in situations such as football matches and protest marches where there are possible violent confrontations. Uses for helping deal with firearms incidents means that the police can gather information without putting lives at risk.

If you fancy making your own spy helicopter, grab a wireless camera and stick it on model helicopter! It’s not cheap, and model helicopters are difficult to fly… but it’s got to be great fun. Going to add that to my wish list I think!
