19th-century Spy Camera Watch

A very rare watch concealing a spy camera made by Lancaster & Co in Birmingham in the 1880s was sold at auction for £21,000 to an unknown bidder in the West Midlands. The watch is believed to be one of only four in existence, and was taken to the auction by the original owner’s grandson.

The watch is actually able to take photographs, but the device is said to be inconvenient to use, since it requires a number of fiddly adjustments to make use of it. I get the impression that this device was not used by the secret services, but perhaps for its novelty value for bird watchers, ramblers, etc.

It’s nice to know that wireless spy cameras were around even in the 1880s! Although this particular one contains as much in the way of electronics as a banana!
