Menwith Hill Spy Base

Two veteran peace protesters have been found guilty of trespassing on a US spy base in North Yorkshire, and were charged with criminal trespass under the new Serious Organised Crime and Police Act. The judge stated that he could have fined or jailed the two women, but he said the offence was minor and they were no threat to anyone.

The US base has been the focus of a great deal of protest due to being a US base staffed with almost entirely US personnel and US security agencies such as the NSA. Although known as a British base, RAF Menwith Hill is only British by name. The base has been accused of being purely in US interests, and is alleged to be illegal in British law.

You can read a slightly biased view of Menwith Hill on this peaceful protest website.
