Create your own nightvision headset

You have seen nightvision headsets, nightvision cameras, and nightvision video cameras all over the place in spy movies, crime investigation television shows, and even on ghost hunter television shows. Some of you may have even gone out and purchased the various types of nightvision headsets just for the pure entertainment purposes, however, a nightvision headset can be one of the most important tools in your spy gadget collection. The good news is that you can create your own nightvision headset instead of spending a lot of money for those you see on television.
Below are the steps in the video that would enable you to build a nightvision headsetset. You can watch the video here.
I have summarised the steps the video takes us through below. It would be quite fun to go along and try this out purely from seeing whether you can build it succesfully; however, it does require quite a few parts to make this work. For others, it might simply be a better option to just buy a cheap nightvision headset in one piece.
1. First, gather all the items you need to create your own nightvision headset. You can find many of these items at your local flea market, electronics store, or maybe in your garage if you save things waiting for a day to find a use for all those old parts.
What you will need:
- Full-size VHS camcorder or at least the analog viewfinder
- Twelve 10mm, 200mw triple Infrared LED’s
- A metal project box - 5″ X 2 1/2″ X 2″
- One any other colour LED to be used for a power indicator
- A shielded, panel mount Phono Jack
- A SPST switch
- One 470ohm
- Two 10ohm resistors
- A Super Low Lux 9 volt Mini B&W spy camera
- 9 Volt batteries
2. Remove the viewfinder from the camcorder.
3. Remove the housing to uncover the components inside the viewfinder.
4. Find the ground wire – track the wires from the power regulator or diode – this will ensure you have the ground wire.
5. You should be able to find the video line by feeding a video signal into the other wires.
6. Create the LED in order. For best results, use 12 LED’s – 6 per parallel row.
7. Attach the 10ohm resistors to the positive end of the LED array.
8. Create the housing using the metal project box – You will need to drill 12 holes for the LED array, a larger hole for the viewfinder, a hole for the switch, a hole for the power indicator, and one hole for the phono jack.
9. Now, put all the parts where they belong inside your project box. One 9 volt battery will power the LED array, the mini camera, and the power LED while another 9 volt battery will give power to the viewfinder.
10. That’s it! Test it out.
You can always use a light coloured power indicator if you do not wish to be seen. Try different things to create your own nightvision headset by using different amounts of LED’s. You will be amazed at just how much you can see in the dark and how great your video will be.
