Continuing on our recent investigative theme, today’s post is about searching for sex offenders. There is a way in which you can learn if you have sex offenders in your neighbourhood. In the United States, all states now have a database online that allows you to search and learn about sex offenders in every state.

Unfortunately a similar service is not available to the public here in the UK just yet. We are still some way off general disclosure here. They are currently available only to select groups of people and organisations on a confidential basis. For example, its available to schools and other public organisations as well landlords.

Every sex offender in the US has to register! This information is on file and is available for the general public as it is considered to be public records. All of these types of public records are kept by local government agencies. Each state has their own laws regarding where these files are kept, however, every state now has a database online that you can search.

The easiest way to search for sex offenders is by clicking on the link for your state. Then in some cases, you will have to agree to a disclaimer before you can go to the next page of the website. Each state and website is a bit different so you will have to read the instructions; however, it is very easy.

The United States Department of Justice has a nationwide database available to the public. In order to search their database you will have to agree to the Conditions of Use by clicking “I agree”.

• On this page type in the code you see and click continue
• On the search page you will be able to type in the last name, first name, county, city and zip code
• You can also just add the city and click the state, however, if the city is very large there may be too many offenders in the area and you will need to add zip codes to narrow down the search.
• The next page will list all the sex offenders in the city or zip code area you typed in.
• Now, you can click on the various names - once you click on, you will be taken to a page that has a picture of the sex offender, their address, appearance, physical identifiers, offenses, and alieases.

The majority of state websites offer the same type of process. Begin protecting your loved ones by doing research with the links provided.
