If you are prone to forgetting where you left things, then a new device developed in Japan might be quite handy as it promises to locate things without the need to search for them.

In essence, its an object recognition device that can identify objects within seconds when looked into through the glasses. The camera that’s attached to the goggles constantly records what is being seen. When a wearer looks at an object the device will store into its ‘memory bank’ by filming it.

The idea behind it is that it will provide a shot of where something was last seen when the wearer asks for it. For now, the device is not always capable of recognising less well-known items or when they are not in full view of the camera.

Although I can see the practical aspect of the idea because we all, at one time or another, have forgotten things, shouting profanities in the process of desperately searching for them :) , it is difficult to say how inclined people will be in wearing a pair just so they can find things in case they end up losing it. I am not sure our mind works that way; we don’t expect to lose things in the first place. However, it could help people with certain illnesses where they are prone to forgetting.

This device is still work in progress and could work in conjunction with a technology such as the Internet to enhance its ability to recognise a vast array of things. Click for more on the story.
