Anonymous Text Messaging - New Way of Fighting Crime

Law Enforcement in America have come up with novel idea to fight crime, especially involving youth - anonymous text messaging. The police are hoping youths who frequently use text to communicate with friends will help them out with crime. Texting is seen as more likely means of getting the young people to report crime than using a phone or the Web.
In order to make the texts anonymous, the police are using a piece of software called TipSoftSMS, which uses encryption and identification aliases to ensure anonymity. Aliases are given to a tipster in order to make follow up communication and to award any possible reward that might be on offer from the police or the victims.
The most complex issue is that it requires typing in a specific keyword depending on the location (area) the crime is to be reported. The police hope to publicise those numbers using billboard ads and by distributing cards.
The system has gone down well in some areas that had adopted the system sometime ago with as many as 1,000 crime tips being reported in Boston alone.
