Google Plans to Photograph UK Homes

It seems Google’s idea of photographing the front millions of homes in the UK so it can be viewed on StreetView, a Website that is part of the Google's network of sites, has not gone down too well with some, who claim it would put people's privacy at stake.

It is already possible to zoom on to a house from a birds eye view in Google Earth, but the issue here is probably that this would give a much more compromising view of a dwelling. The website will give stunning views of homes from the outside at various angles, which to some might be great news, but to others, it may have adverse repurcussions, not to mention the idea that it may violate a person’s privacy.

For example, estate agents and others in the business of selling homes and real estate may welcome it as they may be able to utilise the site for their clients, but others are worried something like this could give potential burglers the ability to study homes prior to striking; for example, they may be able see whether a house is armed with sophisticated surveillance equipment or not which can influence their decision.

Whilst I think its fine Google trying to provide street level photos, I am not really sure what real purpose it would serve other than those mentioned above. I guess curiosity might also be an attraction. The ability to see homes of the rich and famous in close-up might be an entertaining way to pass some time for a few.

It may be wise for Google to put more thought into this project before coming to a decision whether it is a meaningful one or just for some fun. If latter, does it outweigh the concerns people are expressing about privacy and security? More information on this story.
