Intel is introducing a new technology that will actually allow computers to wake up while in their power saving sleep mode in order to receive a phone call over the internet.

At this time, computers can only receive a call over the internet if they are actually on at the time of the call. Due to this, computers cannot replace telephones as this makes them unrealistic and of course a huge waste of energy resources because a computer would be required to be left on at all times.

The new component created by Intel will allow a computer to wake up and return to a normal full powered mode when a telephone call comes in. The computer will be able to activate its own microphone and loudspeaker to alert the user and then connect the telephone call.

There will be four initial remote Wake motherboards that will be designed for desktop computers with an internet connection via Ethernet cable due to the fact that WiFi does not work during the sleep mode.

This will be ideal for people that use their computer for pretty much all their office tasks and communication, especially those that utilise internet telephony to benefit from lower costs. Motherboards fitted with the technology will be available from September 2008, but is difficult to say when computer manufacturers themselves will start installing such motherboards on their computers.
