Most of us take it for granted that as long as we hold on to our keys no one will be able to break in or have access, however, a new technology in development at University of California can prove otherwise. According to the research team, the software, called Sneakey, is able to copy the exact image of a key by getting its bitting code by a process called teleduplication, or from a lehmans point of view, its is able to get an exact ‘coding’ of a key by structering the key’s exact height, width and shape which can then be used for the purpose of getting a new key cut.

Most of us take extreme care to not lose our keys, furthermore, even if it were to get lost, someone that finds it will have no idea who it belongs to in most cases. However, this device allows someone to take a photo even from a distance of 195 feet away which can then be used to form an exact image of the key and then cut in a ring

What’s worse, the photo does not have to show a complete picture of the key, even a badly taken from an angle will suffice because the software is able to decode the a perfect image of the key using the limited picture. So the owner might be completely oblivious to their key being copied. The idea of this device is to prove that a key is not simply safe as long is it remains with the owner. The Sneakey software can also succesfully copy a key based on images shot using a mobile phone.

What the scientists are trying to possibly prove is that crooks, if they are detremined enough and have the knowledge to do so, can copy keys that can lead to theft and crime, so owners should be extremely careful not to expose them in a way that would allow someone to take a photo. However, it is something we should not worry too much about because getting a cut of someone’s key is one thing, knowing what the key gives access to is another, unless of course they do know what it provides access to.
