The world of surveillance is not all one way street. Many people assume the industry only caters to those wishing to carry out surveillance, but look a little deeper and there are ways to combat various types of surveillance. This post will touch on some the methods.

Hidden cameras

The most obvious form of surveillance is the use of hidden cameras for video surveillance. If you are wary that someone might be using a hidden camera on your premises or room to spy on you, it is possible to try and detect covert cameras that might be planted. There are various types of hidden camera detectors out there in the market, ranging from basic ones to very powerful ones, equipped to detect over a much larger area such as buidlings and can do so literally in seconds.

To search for wired cameras you will need to use something like the Spyfinder device.

For a more professional outfit and one that can detect both wired and wireless cameras, somethimg like the following device is available from Brickhouse Security.

Basic computer surveillance

One of the more basic ways someone can carry out surveillance on another person is through computer surveillance. This happens quite frequently in relationships where someone that feels rather uneasy would take measures to look at the Internet history of their partner. Well, the best way to make sure no tracks are left is to delete the temporary Internet files and the cookies after each session. However, often these files are retrievable using some software that can either be bought online or even downloaded free. The best way to make sure you get rid of the files completely and make it unretrievable is by using something like BCWipe from Jetico. http://www.jetico.com/bcwipe.htm

This is just one of the options available. There are other programs available. I am sure those who are very computer savvy may be able to make files unretrievable without needing to use such software as they can probably password protect the necessary files that a file retrievable program cannot bypass.

Listening

If you are worried someone may have planted a listening bug to listen into any conversation you may have or a competitor planting one in an office location to try an intrude into the details of a meeting or the like, there are detectors detectors available to detect such devices. There is a huge variety of listening devices available these days, but since most use radio frequency, something like the detector pictured below can sweep an area to find devices that transmit in radio frequency. This device is actually also a hidden camera detector hence its multi-purpose. However, one thing to bear in mind, sometimes these types of detectors can miss detection if the surveillance devices are switched off.

Tracking

If you are worried a tracking device might be planted in your car and are worried your whereabouts can be tracked, one solution is to use an anti-tracking GPS device such as this one. Products like these might be illegal to use, however. The reason for that could be because of the possibility of interference with other vehicles that may be legitimately tracked on GPS technology.

This particular product use to be sold by some of the leading online retailers of spy gadgets, but most of them no longer stock it anymore due to concerns over the legality of its use in countries like tKe UK, EU, US. However, it may still be possible to buy them from the Far East.

Logging

Computer logging is on the rise. Some people do it for perfectly valid reasons with safety as their priority. For examples, parents using to track their children’s computer activity, but it is not always done with good intentions. There are many people out there trying to do it for surreptitiously e.g. trying to get access to confidential information such as passwords or someone trying to carry out computer surveillance, etc.

The first step someone might be able to take is to install all the usual defences such as anti-spyware, Windows updates, etc as well as too look out for emails with unusual file extension such as .scr and .exe. But for a more thorough defence against logging might be a software such as Keyscrambler. The Keyscrambler scrambles what is typed in to ensure anything detected by a computer logger will not arrive in a readable fashion.
