Google Launches Service to Track Family and Friends

Google is best-known for its search engine but has a host of other services in its roster, including Google Earth, and now it has brought out a mobile tracking service which is called Latitude. This application can be used along with iGoogle and Google maps mobile software.
You are supposed to sign in to your Google account and invite family and friends to Latitude. With this feature you can find out exactly where anybody is at any time. No more lies, whether it is from your spouse, children, friends or business associates – you can find out where they are. This application is different from other spy tracking devices in that all the people who can be tracked have to be signed in.
However, it is possible to manipulate the application and set it to show another location if you want to be somewhere else – a boon if you are engaged in something covert! It has privacy settings and you can share as much or as little information about your whereabouts as you want with your Google list of people.
It uses the global positioning system to track people and may not give the exact location, but a more general one, depending on their privacy settings, of course. Latitude is now available in 27 countries and it is compatible with various smart phones including Blackberry. It can be used with your computer as well, so you can be sitting in one place and tracking people wherever they may be. This software can be downloaded from Google.com/latitude, using your phone’s browser.
It is different to covert tracking devices which are intended to track someone’s wherabouts in an uninformed manner, but this is an opt-in service that requires someone to partcipate in it before they can be tracked.

Sounds great – I have lots of friends who say they are somewhere where they aren’t.
