The US government, through its defense department, has published what it considers the 20 most important security measures that an organisation should implement and carry out in order to combat security threats to its IT systems.

The list seems to be quite a straightforward one as far as the guidelines are concerned and there is nothing there that can really be considered any different to what an organisation should already be aware of if they are taking these threats seriously and fully emphasasing the threats to their systems.

To simplify the list, it can be said to go along the following lines, make a list of authorised and unauthorised software used, implement secure configurations for the networks, monitor, analyse risk, implement controls in case of data leaks, and finally, assess and implement the necessary training to shore up any cracks.

Of course, this simplifies the necessary procedures and controls that need to be put in place, so for a more thorough understanding of what the list produced in its entirety, it can be located here and then click on the link for full details of each step.
