The ability to improve home security is now easier than ever both in terms of range of ways of doing so and from an affordability perspective, as costs of gadgets and devices have come down rapidly. However, by simply installing a high-end security alarm or camera, we can into a false sense of security and overlook more simple areas that can can upgrade security of a home.

There is a UK government website on home security which is very comprehensive that goes into ways you can fully secure a home, or at least give yourself every chance to preven a burglary or the like. We will touch on some of those points here.

It is all very well to have home and fire insurance, but that does not replace the intrinsic value of the things lost. And let us not forget that sometimes burglaries turn violent as well.

Start with the entry and exit points of your home. Whether you live in an apartment or a house, you should have a similar kind of check list to go through. Are your windows secured? If they are not, you should secure them with locks which are difficult to open and also use glass which does not break easily. All windows should be safely locked, even ones which are small. Avoid using louvered glass, because the slats are easily removable.

Doors should be strong and secure. Wooden doors should be thick and locks should be difficult to open for a would-be burglar. And don’t hide keys in obvious places. You should have a peephole at your door entrance to check who is ringing a door bell before you open a door. Have a security chain which is strong as and extra safety measure. Keep the entrance well lit so you can see who it is and discourage burglars from coming in.

If strange people ring your door bell be very careful as burglars are knows to pose as courier or utility people just to gain easy entry. If you are going away have a light timer so light come on when it get dark, so an outsider will think the home is occupied – you can even have music come on. If you live in an apartment don’t buzz anybody in. If you live in a house check all areas which are susceptible to burglar attack and secure your house as best you can.

When you are leaving your house for extended periods of time makes sure somebody collects your mail and if there are any neighbours have them look in on your place and inform the police as well.

An intruder alarm takes care of the internal security of your house. The burglar alarms, also known as security alarms (or Home security systems) are deliberately contrived to guard your house against break-ins. Today you can discern different kinds of alarms with different working principles.

Currently, superior burglar alarms ranging from miniature, self-contained noisemakers, to intricate, multi-zoned systems having color-coded computer monitor outputs are available. This also applies to portable alarms, which you can use to protect your cars or other vehicles and its contents.

These are great self defense tips: keep your doors & windows locked, be careful who you open your home to, and some type of motion detectors on the outside will keep you safer by knowing when someone is near to your property and you can start the process of protecting yourself from some type of home invasion.
