MI5 has admitted that its website was for sometime open to hacking thanks to a cross-site scripting vulnerability. This flaw could have had dangerous repercussions as it could have permitted hackers to inject code into the website and redirect visitors to malicious sites.

A hacker actually posted the information on the Team Elite hacker forum, and the team alerted MI5 of the vulnerability problems. The site was vulnerable because of the embedded Google search engine. Now the flaw has been put right and the site is secure again. MI5 said that no hacking had actually taken place and in any case it was not sensitive information that was at stake.
