Finally it is online and working – the national identity card data base went live on October 20th and already has 538 people on in by November 19th. It is first opening to the general public in Greater Manchester and people residing there can apply from November 30th. The next phase will be in the north-west of England, probably Liverpool from early next year.

The program is already controversial, with many people being against having a National Identity Register, though the government says that there are more people for the scheme than against it. The National Biometric Identity Service (NBIS) and the UK passport application systems are included in this scheme as are various other government databases. There is a very real concern that the register could be open to hacking and also people are wary of the ‘big brother is watching us’ syndrome.

People for civil liberties, IT security experts and politicians have expressed apprehensions about the register. The Conservatives have also said that if they come into power in 2010 they will scrap the scheme.

This is pretty scary stuff, and it seems the UK is leading the way to a total surveillance state. With binge drinking at an all time high & pretty women passed out in the snow on New Years Heave, what else do Brits have to live for?

At least we still have a thread of freedom left here before it is cut. Does anyone care about this stuff?
