Spies In The News

Online Bank Fraud on the Upswing

The figures say it all – there has been a 16 percent increase in phishing attacks over last year records show. As criminals get more and more sophisticated, they find it easier to spy on people’s computers and get hold of banking passwords and other details.

And despite all the anti-virus software and despite the fact that people have been warned time and again, they still fall prey to phishing attacks. The fraudsters send emails to customers purportedly from the bank, directing them to a site which looks like a legitimate bank site and asks them to verify their details either for security purposes or because data has been lost or because the bank wants to update its records.

The unsuspecting customer does so and voila! The criminal has all the details at his fingertips to siphon off the money. £57.9 million was lost in this manner last year alone. Banks blame customers and customers blame the bank and in the end it is the criminals who are the winners.

If you use net banking these are some measures to protect yourself:

  • Never, never go to a bank’s site via an email – close the email and then enter the site if required.
  • Use firewalls on your computer and check emails only from trusted sources.
  • Run anti malware/spyware programs regularly to see that there is no spy key logging software installed on your pc.
  • Check the security icon (looks like a lock) in the address bar on the internet page.
  • A secure page will also show https rather than http.
  • If you use an email provider like gmail ask for ‘show details’ and check where the email is actually from because the sender’s email address can be easily forged.
  • Most banks now have an additional layer of security for internet payments – they either give you an extra internet pin or ask you for particular number on your debit or credit card or you can have virtual cards made with a certain limit which are good only for a short period of time.
