Many people give a ring to their mobile phones to find out where they are. Then there are remotes which glow in the dark for easy location. When something is at home, it is easy to locate, but what happens when you lose something outside? Nowadays some phones come with tracking devices which are inbuilt.

If you are in the habit of losing your car or home keys, or your bag or wallet, or your laptop or iPad, you can find it thanks to the Cobra Tag. It comes as a Bluetooth tagging system which is built into a device which looks like a key fob. The key fob works with Cobra Tag smart phone app, which you have to download into your smart phone. It will work with Blackberry and Android phones.

The first thing is that if whatever is attached to the tag is separated from your phone (at a particular distance) it will emit an audible tone to warn you. But if you do not hear the tone or get separated regardless, it will send the GPS location and the time to your email or even Facebook/Twitter account.

Now what happens if your smart phone is lost? If you have the key fob, press the button and the smart phone will ring and you ought to hear it if you are within hearing distance. And a feature in the app will also produce a ring on the lost item, if you are just trying to find it around.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/FedEx-Senseaware.jpg'alt'FedEx Senseaware Location Tracking" />

FedEx is one of the most trusted names in the courier delivery business. But accidents and delays can happen and this is of utmost importance in some industries where delivery on time is crucial because the shipment can become unusable for any number of reasons. This is particularly true for the medical industry but can apply to a host of other industries where urgent delivery and knowing where the package is crucial in its operations and the strive for greater efficiency.

FedEx has thus come up with Senseaware which comprises a sensor the size of a Blackberry handset, which has temperature and light meters as also GPS and a cellular antenna. When the shipment has Senseaware attached, it becomes live as its contents are constantly monitored for temperature changes, location and if the package has been tampered with or opened or exposed to light. This means that the integrity of the parcel is not compromised in any way. This is a bit like a tracking device but with more details of the contents

A successful trial run was undertaken in transporting surgical kits which the doctors used and then sent back. The kits are then refurbished and used again. The live monitoring saves both the doctors’ and the company’s time as there is no delay.

While currently the Senseaware costs $120 a month, if it is put in greater use and greater economies of scale are generated, the price is expected to drop to $10 a trip, which means it can be used for more items, perishable or otherwise.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/little-buddy-child-tracker.jpg'alt'Insignia, Little Buddy Tracker" />

Tracking devices designed to monitor the whereabouts of children are being pushed on to the market at regular intervals as it would seem they are quite a popular device with anxious parents. And here is another one – Little Buddy Tracker. This one is designed for younger children.

Anybody who has a child knows how scary it can be when children are not where they are supposed to be. Children get lost or missing from schools, malls, parks, trains, buses, from crowded places and not necessarily because they are victims of any crime, but because they just tend to wander off.

It packs a powerful transmitter into its small body and can be kept in your child’s school bag or lunchbox or maybe even a pocket.

The device has to be activated via its web site. If the child is not at a designated place at a specified time you will get a text message. You have to specify the places and times. The Insignia will also let you know when its battery is running low. If the device is kept on the child even when he or she is at home, or at a friend’s place or in the backyard, and you are out, you will learn whether the he or she is really where he is supposed to be.

There are pros and cons with tracking children as some would argue it impedes in their independence and therefore development whereas others would argue their safe being a good reason for tracking.

A tracking device designed for children does not have to be used in an unsuspecting manner; a parent could agree with the child that they would carry the device so they can ensure they get to and return from school safely, for example. Likewise, it can be used when they go out with their friends.

The device is available for the American market from BestBuy, and at $99.99, it would seem good value, but since a lot of children these days carry mobile phones, they could just as easily have a tracking service integrated on in it for a small monthly fee.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/satellite-tracker.jpg'alt'Satellite Trackers in Action" />

The Guardian recently decided to see what happens to mail during a postal strike using covert satellite tracking. Whenever there is a strike by Royal Mail, nobody really knows the fate of the post which may be lying in post boxes, in sorting offices or even get delivered on time or late.

Normally GPS tracking devices are used for other purposes – to track vehicles, keeping tabs on a person and other covert reasons. But Tracker Shack, a Yorkshire based company which supplies these nifty gadgets, decided to use for another purpose altogether. When Royal Mail was on strike and had announced the same, Tracker Shack cleverly mailed three of these devices as first class mail just in time for the last post to Essex, London and Bingley. The result: the trackers were able to provide information about how and where they were moving, every 30 seconds.

All legally done of course – and their paths can be tracked and traced via Google Maps. Surprisingly the Essex and Bingley ones reached safely, but the one which was addressed to Guardian is stuck somewhere close to the office. Hopefully it will reach.

You can find how they did in the Guardian blog here.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/childrens-gps-watch.jpg'alt'Childrens GPS Watch" />

This watch is designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years. Worn on the wrist like an ordinary watch, it is much more than just a device for telling the time: it contains GSM and GPS modules which allow you to locate the child anywhere anytime. This can be done via SMS or the internet, so you can keep tabs on your kids instead of worrying about them.

It can tell you your child’s location within 3 meters and once you register your mobile number and email address the interface will only access these, so you don’t have to worry about anybody else knowing your child’s whereabouts. You can use this to track your child s movements and keep a watch without having to be physically present.

If the device is removed, you will also receive an alert on your mobile. This option is good if someone is trying to forcibly remove the watch from the child that can alert you of any potential trouble. You can even set pre-determined locations for the child to be in and if he or she moves from there, you will receive the intimation.

For protective parents or small or older children this is a product which can give you great peace of mind just knowing where your children are and also knowing if you need to worry about their safety!

For example, the GPS watch might be something worth considering when a child starts to go school on his/her own for the first time.

The watch is not really for the more style conscious children as it looks pretty bland, so might not look good on older children, but there are other options available with different designs.

When the vehicle it is on stops, how long and where is stop will also show up. As it has good memory, you can store the data of previous journeys. The geo-fencing interface will sound an alarm when the tracker leaves a particular location.

The 14000mAh triple-pack battery lasts a long time and if you want to switch off the GPS tracking, you can do so by sending a simple text message. As it uses GPS technology it is more efficient than using a tracking system which uses mobile phone technology which does not give an accurate picture or location. However, X-Tracker LiveMap is expensive at £510 and you can certainly get cheaper models in the market, but they may not have such a long battery life. Having said that, the price is inclusive of a single year’s license, by which it probably means the ability to log into the website and make use of the tracking facilities for a year without having to pay any monthly fees.

So, this tracker is something that you may want to consider if you want detailed satellite imagery along with the standard Google Maps and which has a very long batter life compared to most other trackers.

If your car has this X-Driven Driving Recording System, which can continuously record audio and video footage of what is going on, the person driving the car will be protected to some extent. Via Google Earth, the in-built GPS interface will be able to pinpoint where the vehicle is, the direction the car is going as well as the speed it is moving at.

Accidents happen without warning and that is why they are called accidents and if the car is involved in an accident, all the data will be stored in this gadget and can be downloaded and reviewed later.

It comes with its own software which is supplied on the SD card so that you can view all the details on your computer. The X-Driven Driving Recording System comes with a 2 GB SD card so it can store up to 18 hours of continuous footage. It also comes with a manual record button and if you use that you can be sure that old footage will not be over-written. It has a adjustable picture quality and a 170° lens which will have a wider field of vision.

You can also use something like this as proof if you were to make an insurance claim following an accident, if it wasn’t your fault, of course.

You can easily install this on the windscreen or dashboard and it comes with a DC adaptor for charging. Whether you are in a line which needs you to have a gadget like this or you just want it for additional safety, this nifty gadget will earn its keep if anything ever happens to your vehicle.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/zoombak.jpg'alt'Zoombak GPS Locator" />

Unlike Hansel and Gretel, nobody and nothing can get lost if they have the Zoombak GPS locator on them – you’ll be able to track them down! Say goodbye to fairy tales and welcome to new age technology. This advanced GPS locator can not only find its way into spy thrillers but also into real life. This little gadget, which looks somewhat like a small pager, packs a lot of punch.

The Zoombak GPS locator works by using the same technology that satellites and mobiles use and it can be tracked via the Zoombak web site – so yes, you do need access to a computer with an internet connection to find out where the device actually is. If you put it somewhere covert (or openly) you can actually track the person or object. Say if you put it in your pet’s collar, or your child’s haversack or even your car, you can locate the person/object if it gets lost. You can, of course, also use it to track a suspicious employee, a cheating spouse or a wayward teen.

It will work in a continuous mode or in bursts, depending on how you set it. You can get notified via email on where the person you are trucking is and you can even set safety zones where it will tell you and you need not worry about the person. The battery lasts 3-5 days depending on how many zones you set and whether it in continuous mode or not. If it is on low battery or its battery goes off, Zoombak will notify you of the same. It costs only $100 and you have to pay $15 a month for the service.

This particular version does not seem much different to other similar trackers, although $15 a month service seems pretty decent.

<img src='http://www.spyreview.co.uk/images/review/gps-car-jammer.jpg'alt"GPS Car Jammer" />

If you suspect that your vehicle is being tracked by a GPS (global positioning system) device or you just want to make yourself extremely safe then you may wnat to consider a GPS car jammer. If you are security conscious person because of the work you do or for any other reason then the GPS jammer is a small device which will jam the signals emanating from your car.

The other person will not be able to track you or follow you. The GPS jammer will plug into a 12 volt outlet which is in the car normally to plug in a cigarette lighter. While this device may be illegal to use in many countries, it is also usually illegal to track people unless they are suspected of any criminal activity, unless it is done by law enforcement agencies with all the requisite paperwork in place. Since this only works within a range of 3 to 6 metres, enough to cover your vehicle, you should be fairly safe in the knowledge it is not interfering with tracking devices that may be planted on other vehicles, which may be done legitimately, of course.

Again, while this device works on most frequencies, keep in mind that if you are jamming the signals, the person who is tracking you will also become aware that you are suspicious and that is why you have an anti-tracking device in your vehicle in the first place. The jammer comes with 3 to 6 metres coverage. It also has a one year warranty. So, if you are a teen who wants to thwart the parents, you should realise they too will realise that you realise what they are up to.
