Getting Spy Gadgets from Maplin.co.uk!

Monday, February 12th, 2007

If you’re in the UK, you may well have heard of Maplin. It’s a great electronics company that used to specialise in electronic components, but have moved into mostly electronic gadgets in the last 10 years. So I thought I’d do a post on what cool spy stuff you can buy at Maplin!

Night Hawk KitWireless Camera with BatteryWireless CameraUSB 2.0 DVR Kit

So we’ll start off with a wireless night-vision camera with a portable 2.5″ receiver monitor, called the Night Hawk. The receiver is a 4 channel 2.4GHz device, so will work with any 2.4GHz wireless cameras. The receiver comes with a rechargeable battery and cradle for recharging too! Surprisingly good value at £150.

The Wireless Eagle-Eye Miniature Security Camera and Black Hawk Wireless Camera with Built in Battery are examples of 2.4GHz wireless cameras that would work with the Night Hawk wireless receiver. They are both miniature pinhole cameras, but the latter features an internal rechargeable battery that will last about 5 hours. Both of the cameras cost £80, which is a little on the expensive side. However, the cameras are from Swann, who are a recognised and respected CCTV and camera manufacturer.

With all the cameras that you can get, you’ll probably want to do some recording too. So how about a USB2 CCTV System. The USB 2.0 4-channel video kit from RapidOS can record 50 images per second at D1 high industry quality. You can even email the captures to any email address using the high quality software provided with the kit. Surprisingly, the kit only costs £80, which is remarkably cheap for such a good DVR solution.

Anyway, those are Maplin’s offerings. Have fun looking around!

Security Beam Barrier Alarm

You see break beam detectors in the movies all the time. In most cases, the beam is some colourful laser that triggers an alarm which is swiftly followed by several heavily armed guards. However, in the real world, a visible laser beam very quickly informs an intruder where they should avoid going… which is a good thing… unless you want intruders to actually trigger alarms!

Learn to Spy at Spy Academy

Saturday, December 23rd, 2006
Spy Academy

If you ever fancied trying some spy training, then a day at the Spy Academy might be for you. It’s a fun-packed 3 hours of playing with covert cameras, UHF bugs and radios, a range of listening devices and even lock picking gadgets. You get the chance to use guns and rifles in realistic scenarios and even have a crack at defusing a bomb in the bomb de-activation challenge. Finally, you’ll receive some training on unarmed combat techniques!

This is a day-out held in many parts of the UK, and is not dependent on weather conditions (given how much it rains in the UK, that’s a good thing!). At a cost of just £99, you might know someone who’d love do be on the Spy Academy experience day!
